Hot Water Bottle Cover

I knit this for my grandmother, and plan to make at least one more for me. It is wise to measure your hot water bottle first! I bought mine at the drug store; it measures about 14" x 8".

Yarn: Woolease worsted (20% wool, 80% acrylic), 1 skein (3 oz, 85g,197 yards/skein)

Needles: #9 single pointed needles, or whatever needles get you to your correct gauge

Gauge: 9 stitches/2" in pattern

Cast on 72 stitches
Work back and forth in the following pattern (sand stitch):

row 1: knit across
row 2: *k1 p1* repeat * to * across all stitches

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until your work measures about 13" (or until you are 1/2" away from the total length of the bottle.)

row 3: (k7,yo,k2tog) 8 times
row 4: repeat row 2 above
row 5: knit across
row 6: repeat row 2 above
Cast off loosely in knit stitch

Fold in half and sew up side using mattress stitch (see Notes below.)
Crochet (slip stitch) bottom together

Make a tie for the cover with a single row of crochet, braid, twisted cord, or i-cord, ~20" long.
Thread the tie through the holes made by the yarn overs.

Notes:
The water bottle cover is reversable, but I prefer to have the knit (smoother) side out.
Descriptions of the mattress stitch are at Sweaterscapes and Lucy Neatby's page.
